The death of Nusrat Bhutto, widow of former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and mother of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto sent a wave of sorrow among Pakistanis online, with many recalling anecdotes of the First Lady and her struggle for democracy amidst tragedy.

While condolences streamed online, Twitter users also acknowledged Nusrat Bhutto’s sacrifices and suffering during the era of General Ziaul Haq.

Sarfraz Shah | 13 years ago | Reply Nusrat Bhutto offered more sacrifices to the nation and suffered more at the hands of army dictators than any other person in the history. She has been a Titan among ordinary mortals and never surrendered to tyrants. I am sure there are still some supporters and apologists of rightwing dictators but the vast majority of Pakistani people have nothing but love and respect for Begum Sahiba. Bhuttos have been more popular than all the other politicians combined. The whole world recognizes and acknowledges their services to democracy and struggle against the army dictators and religious fanatics. It is a shame that we do not have too many women like here.

healing guy | 13 years ago | Reply @ Salma: try to reason with facts rather than hollow words Not only did the establishment brought the industry to a standstill due to the holiday, they ordered a 10day nationwide mourning period, cancelled the upcoming session of National Assembly (wednesday), chartered a plane on taxpayers' money especially to bring the body back, hijacked the occasion to garner sympathies for the garbage 3.5 year rule & in the process caused a loss of billions to the exchequer. No country in the civilised world follows any death or birth, not even of the founding fathers, with such a nonsensical, diabolical shutdown of their own day-to-day national affairs causing the economy to nosedive. It is, indeed, ironic that for the rights of whom the lady struggled her entire life (daily wage earners) had to sleep unfed the day she met her Maker!

Please Sir accept my condolence on the death of our Mother ,Great leader of Asia and your Grand mother Muhtarma Begum Nusrat Bhutto Sahiba. Sir no doubt she was very kind to every party worker .I have remember one incident it was June month and there was a great heat we worker went to Bhutto larkana and there was not enough place for (Shelter) worker,when Muhtarma Begum Nusrat Bhutto Sahiba came seeing to this we were in heat ,she scolded to organizer that why my worker are standing in heat .She was such kind and caretaker .

@tanzeel, she was a cancer patient 4 a long time then after being tortured in gadaffi stadium, she developed alzeimer's disease which z related 2 memory loss. she was residing with benazir bhutto in dubai. in later years, she suffered 4m stroke as well. thats why she was away 4m all the media limelight. she even didnt know that benazir bhutto died in 2007. she wasn't told b/c of her condition. RIP. a corageous woman. may her soul rest in peace

People's Party regime had thrown her aside for quite sometime. Nobody bothered to talk about Ms. Bhutto not even in media but when she died Prime Minister announced Public Holiday in economically failed nation and media started giving massive coverage to her as if we care.
