Why the burqa ban makes no sense

Umair Javed July 10, 2010

LAHORE: This is with reference to Faiza S Khan’s article “Why the burqa ban makes no sense” (July 10). Besides looking at this issue from the important perspective of gender roles across the world, it’s also important to look at this as the crisis of the very foundations on which the European state rests. Its homogenous brand of secularism, outdated social contract, and lingering questions about immigration, require serious review and updating. As Ms Khan points out, it appears that their moving further to the right is an attempt to answer these problems. When the Free World was up in arms over the fascist rise of Italy, Spain and Germany, they claimed to fight for the values of liberal enlightenment, of individual freedoms, and of tolerance. Maybe it’s time for Sarkozy to think about why he isn’t speaking German right now.
