ISLAMABAD: Scientist Dr Samar Mubarakmand has said that only Thar Coal can provide guaranteed long-term energy security to Pakistan’s industrial competitiveness due to its cost effectiveness.
He stated this while briefing the National Assembly Standing Committee on Inter Provincial Coordination, which met held here on Friday under the chairmanship of Mir Ahmedan Khan Bugti.
Mubarakmand informed the Committee that the current energy crisis has so far caused Rs230 billion losses to the country and made 400,000 people jobless. The project should be declared a matter of national security and of strategic important so that donors and multilateral firms invest more, he added.
He further said that the total power generation capacity of the country on coal-based was 2.27%, while India had 64.6%. He said that Thar lignite coal reserves were 175 billion tons spread over 9,600 Sq.Km, having generation potential of 100,000 MW consuming 536 million tons/ year.
These reserves are equivalent to 50 billion tons of oil, which are more than Iran and Saudi Arabia combined oil reserves or over 2,000 TCF of gas (42 times greater than total gas reserves discovered in Pakistan so far).
He said that four blocks were available for investment in Thar. The Thar project for 100 MW was planned for mid 2012, for which the gasifier has been designed, major equipment ordered and technical team has been mobilised, while drilling is in full swing, he said.

What I dont hear in these breifeings is some one asking smart questions
Why there are so many questions marks over the envirnmental issues in this project. Why dont the esteemed Dr. work to address or minimize does enviornmental issues. Why Chinese goverments is providing soft loans Why our banks are not fortcoming (I am sure there is genuine issue)@ Cautous The story of pakistan is allways unique in whole world u ever heard of that.
Inappropriate comparison. Coal reserves used in India and most of the World are mined either through open pit or underground methods where the coal is harvested and send to electric generating facilities. The That Coal project relies on underground coal gasification which is considered more expensive, experimental and to my knowledge there is no project currently operating that generates electricity using this method. Australia has closed down it's projects and neither China nor Uzbecs (your advisers) are generating electricity using this method.
@ Mr Hasan Good luck buddy if they heard u from here
My Final Year Project is based on Coal bed Methane entitled “Production Practices for Coal bed Methane” (Like Drilling, Completion, Stimulation, Enhance CBM and production methods for CBM). Due to increasing demand of methane gas, we decided to work on “Thar Coal” (Pakistan) that is one of the largest lignite coal deposits of the world having over 175 billion tones of coal reserves. This coalfield is expected to contain commercially exploitable reserves of Methane gas (CBM) as a by products and may contain up to 36 trillion cubic feet of coalbed methane with up to 21 trillion cubic feet potentially recoverable. which can be used as clean fuel. Now, I want to do job with Dr Samar Mubarakmandas team in Thar. Kindly give me a chance. Address: C/O Saif-ur-Rehman Electric Works outside Parity Gate near Taxi Stand Bannu, KPK Pakistan.
