Amid simmering tensions between Pakistan and the United States, Islamabad on Monday saw a flurry of diplomatic activity, both overt and covert, directed at defusing the situation.
US Ambassador Cameron Munter, recently returned from Washington, held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir. Under more secrecy, senior Saudi intelligence officials met the ISI chief in an attempt to bridge the divide between Pakistan and the US. To add further speculation, a delegation led by Chinese vice Prime Minister Meng Jianzhu, who is also China’s top security official, landed in the capital and held talks with Pakistani civilian and military leaders.

In a related development, Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani cancelled a trip to the UK, where he was due to meet Defence Secretary Liam Fox. Pakistan Army spokesman General Athar Abbas said the visit had been “postponed indefinitely” but would be re-scheduled. Abbas put the decision down to “the current situation at home” but refused to elaborate further. It is presumed that Kayani called off the visit apparently to continue in-house talks on mounting US pressure for Pakistan to abjure its alleged support for the Haqqani network.
Saudis as intermediaries?
Sources claim that Saudi Arabia is quietly working to mediate between Pakistan and the United States.
The meeting between Saudi intelligence officials and Lt. General Ahmed Shuja Pasha took place at the Chaklala Airbase, sources said. Some media reports claim that the ISI chief, after a “crucial” meeting with the Saudi intelligence officials, dashed to Jeddah for further consultations.
When approached, however, a senior military official confirmed that a delegation of Saudi intelligence officials was on a visit to Islamabad, but insisted it had nothing to do with the ongoing row between Pakistan and the US.
“We have counter-terrorism cooperation with the US and the visit was part of that cooperation,” said the official, who also strongly denied reports that the ISI chief had rushed off to Saudi Arabia.
Munter and Bashir agree on ‘deeper engagement’
Both the US embassy and the foreign ministry attempted to downplay the hype over the issue of the Haqqani network after a meeting between US Ambassador Munter and Foreign Secretary Bashir.
“It was a regular meeting but also indicates the fact that Pakistan and the US have a broad-based relationship,” said Mark Stroh, US Embassy spokesperson.
“Both agreed on dialogue and deeper engagement at all levels,” said foreign ministry spokesperson Tehmina Janjua, adding that the meeting between the two was a follow-up on the three-and-half-hour meeting between US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar in New York on September 18.

An American diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Express Tribune that the situation is “still tense and fluid.” He declined to elaborate.
Pakistan and China cooperation
China’s Public Security Minister Meng Jianzhu arrived in Islamabad on Monday and was scheduled to meet senior officials. Although agreements for economic and technical cooperation were signed, there may have also been discussions on Pakistan’s ties with the US.
“China is always there for us,” said Interior Minister Rehman Malik as he welcomed Meng. Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar echoed Malik’s views, saying: “The Chinese leader reaffirmed China’s continuing support for Pakistan in its fight against militancy and the promotion of regional peace and stability,”
Babar said that during two rounds of talks, mutual cooperation, the regional situation, the fight against militancy and the recent devastation caused by heavy rains in Sindh were discussed.
“The President said that Pakistan greatly appreciates China’s support for Pakistan on all issues of major concern. He said that the Chinese role was very important to usher in a new era of peace and stability in the region,” he added.
Pakistan and China signed a number of agreements, including those on relief goods, emergency humanitarian assistance and the rehabilitation of some damaged parts of the National Highways network. One of the agreements signed involved approximately $250 million of Chinese assistance.
Later the President hosted dinner for the Chinese dignitary and his delegation that was also attended by some federal ministers and senior officials.
Meeting with CJCSC
Earlier Meng Jianzhu met General Khalid Shameem Wynne, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff committee. According to ISPR, the media wing of the Pakistan Army, both leaders discussed matters pertaining to mutual interests and the emerging geo-strategic situation of the region. Jianzhu appreciated the role played by the armed forces of Pakistan in the fight against terror. Wynne highlighted the converging interest of Pakistan and China, both in security and economic arenas.
Iranian delegation arrives tomorrow
Iran’s Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar will pay an official two-day visit to Pakistan on September 28-29. “Bilateral meetings have been regularly held between us and the Pakistanis to discuss security and other forms of cooperation,” said Mehdi Mohammadi-Fard, deputy interior minister for parliamentary and international affairs, quoted by the Iranian Fars News Agency. The two countries will sign a security agreement on the sidelines of the visit.

Need Musharaf in pakistan to stable the situation ,US and PAK are in life long aggrement as that of wife and husband.the aggrement reads as;what so ever be the situation you are not going to leave me alone or going to marry any one else. Both of them are male as well as female. Some timesUS,having upper hand act as husband and expolite his wife and vice versa.they have children out of thier marriage [al qaida].
@Javed: Against currencies it is pegged? I don't see how you can measure with other currency that is sinking with the item being measured.
In simpler words all currencies are pegged to dollar and all currencies are going down so you can't see the devaluation.
Here is purchasing power of US dollar for about 70 years (Source:Bloomberg) http://static.seekingalpha.com/uploads/2009/5/8/sauploadpurchasingpower.png
Save yourselves and buy tangible assets and use metals to store your value. Coming years are going to be tough.
@Shyam: Its called diplomacy! Thank you for your useful comments.
Dear Pakistanis ! Confrontation with USA at this juncture when Pakistan in deeply mired in its internal problems, natural calamities and economic ruins is most unfortunate. The wrong policies adapted by successive regimes to bow down before US in the past for their insatiable appetite of Dollars has landed the country in this trouble. The beggars can not be choosers. You have taken billions of dollars from US to fight those terrorists whom you now perceive to be your national assets. The hype created in media over so called ``all weather friend,, china shall never come to your rescue beyond a mere rhetoric and probably a veto in security council if US choose to press for declaration of war against you. China will not risk loosing its billions in trade with US and EU for your sake despite Pakistan being its strategic partner to keep its foot in the region.Let better sense prevail tone down your rhetoric and mend fences with US as there is no other choice left for you.You have already harmed the cause of Islam beyond repairs and war shall be last straw to this bastion of Islam.Self respect is very much desirable but keeping patience is better for a fruitful future of your country.May Allah save Pakistan.
@ Miss Mehreen: Life is to leave free not to follow others. Otherwise no need for slavish life to spend it useless.
Pakistan has to change in many ways in order to be accepted by international community as a friendly nation particularly by western powers. Pakistan has to come out from the Islamization, this just does not working any more, there are so many Muslim countries, why are we have to be champions of Islam, let Saudis take the responsibility of being the elder brother, well they make billions of dollars of our religion, every year millions and millions Muslims from all over the world visiting Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj or Umra. If Pakistan give their own citizen (180 millions) a purchasing power and money start changing hands the economy will become vibrant. Pakistan have every reason to be successful state, Pakistan have agriculture land, some infrastructure, education, and geopolitical location. In no way Pakistan should be involved in any International political conflicts, We are a developing country and we need to secure future of our generation. It is not sane to lock horn with USA or any other country in the world.
@Moise: To this day the US dollar has never been devalued.
@Maoist: coz pakistan hate India, you can congratulate, but also do worry about pakistan's collapsing economy, pakistan-china friendship possible only with the expense of pakistan's economy. i hate those people who hate me.
@Subhash, India: We are not going down alone. We are taking you and some others along.
I hope all the equipment given by china to pakistan is not the same quality as there Railway Engines given to pakistan .... and at the time of crisis ... may god help them to work ....properly..
@Arindom,
Well I have heard it: When a US delegate once confronted a Chinese diplomat about Beijing's uncompromising support for Pakistan, the Chinese reportedly responded with a heavily-loaded sarcastic remark: "Pakistan is our Israel".
@Gadhay kay pechay bhains.........: You are right. A big delegation from China has visited Pakistan followed by Iranians so something's terribly wrong or was going wrong. Every nation suppose to stand up on their own feet. Now we cant expect China to take care of every department in Pakistan. Pakistan has to deal the problems on its own. ON the other hand a support from China is needed which is already there in form of money and strategic supply.
@Gadhay kay pechay bhains.........: Please read my comment again. I have not stated that your all weather friend is a risk but whether China would come would come to your rescue is a crucial question since it can ill-afford to risk billions of dollars trade with US by confronting Washington. Though China has invested in various infrastructure projects in Pakistan but it is unlikely to provide substantial aid as you got from America. Moreover, you would know better what shabby treatment has China meted out to its friends ie N Korea, Vietnam, Cuba and many African countries.
@R S JOHAR: You worry too much.......................but it is something for us to know and you to find out.....................and that, my concerned friend is a risk you would have to take in your search for the truth!
@R S JOHAR: it is one-way love....have you every heard a Chinese top official talking about it in International fora - it's almost they are ashamed of their list of friends and the latest addition of Pakistan along with N.Korea, Sudan, Iran and Cuba!
Though Pakistanis and their govt may consider their relationship with China higher than Himalayas and deeper than oceans but keeping in view of their past record, one is not sure whether the Chinese also feel the same way and deliver during a crisis situation in Pakistan.
Here i felt something that If US President don't really feel secure visiting Pakistan in his almost whole period of Presidency comparing India more why others don't feel the same?? And a sound came to whisper my mind that i enjoys to be like a western, but my heart will always belong to Pakistan!! So i think i am pretty much happy that we are finally getting back our Friendship hands from the west as they have just given us dozens of drones weekly and a bunch of blames daily.
A storm in a tea cup over the meeting of two lower level officials! What would happen if it were Chinese president or PM?
