The Mandalorian and Grogu may mark Din Djarin and Grogu’s big-screen debut, but Jon Favreau says their story is far from over.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Favreau teased that he already has plenty of ideas for where the beloved duo could go next within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe.

“I have a lot of notes and ideas,” Favreau said, describing the future of the characters as a “wide open canvas.”

The filmmaker explained that one of the joys of working on The Mandalorian franchise is watching the characters evolve naturally over time. According to Favreau, storylines often begin taking on “a life of their own” once the creative process gets underway.

While a fourth season of The Mandalorian had originally been written, Lucasfilm ultimately shifted focus toward developing a theatrical film instead. Favreau and Dave Filoni had completed scripts for Season 4 before the studio pivoted toward The Mandalorian and Grogu as the next major Star Wars movie.

Favreau also praised Filoni’s role in shaping the broader interconnected Star Wars timeline, especially with characters like Ahsoka Tano and Grand Admiral Thrawn becoming increasingly important to future stories.

The upcoming film follows Din Djarin and Grogu on a new mission tied to the New Republic and Rotta the Hutt, the son of Jabba the Hutt. The movie is set to further connect the post-Return of the Jedi era stories currently unfolding across Disney+ series and theatrical projects.

Favreau recently explained that the movie was intentionally designed to welcome newcomers who may not have watched the Disney+ series, while still rewarding longtime fans.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to hit theatres on May 22, 2026.
