Why Rue’s mother Leslie barely appears in ‘Euphoria’ season 3 and what Nika King revealed
Nika King shares how a single short phone scene in ‘Euphoria’ surprised her family and reflects on filming changes

The third season of HBO’s Euphoria has drawn attention not only for its expanded and darker storytelling but also for the noticeably reduced presence of Leslie Bennett, played by Nika King, the mother of Zendaya’s character Rue. Leslie has long been positioned as a stabilising force in Rue’s turbulent life, yet her role in season three has been significantly limited, with only a brief appearance in a phone call sequence that aired in the episode titled “Stand Still and See.”
The scene shows Rue reaching out to her mother after a series of emotionally intense events, including a confrontation with Jules and the discovery of information that could impact her legal situation. The call briefly reconnects the two characters, with Leslie responding from afar. The moment is short but significant, marking the only meaningful appearance of the character in the season to date.
Nika King has spoken about the reaction to the scene, including how its brevity surprised even those close to her. She shared that the moment was captured in a way that emphasised Leslie’s emotional distance from Rue, rather than a full narrative return. King also reflected on how the reaction from viewers and her own family highlighted the contrast between expectation and screen time.
The reduced role of Leslie in season three aligns with broader structural changes in the series. Rue’s storyline has shifted further away from her immediate family, focusing more heavily on external pressures, including drug-related criminal networks and escalating personal consequences. As a result, supporting characters tied to her earlier emotional grounding have appeared less frequently.
Leslie’s absence has been noted by viewers who have followed the series since its earlier seasons, where her presence helped frame Rue’s addiction struggle through a family lens. In contrast, season three has expanded its scope, placing Rue in increasingly isolated circumstances, both emotionally and geographically.
Despite limited screen time, King has indicated continued appreciation for the role and the character’s importance within Rue’s narrative arc. Leslie’s brief return suggests that while the character is no longer central to every storyline, she remains a symbolic connection to Rue’s earlier life and ongoing attempts at recovery.
Euphoria season three premiered in April 2026 on HBO and continues to air weekly on Sundays at 9pm ET, with episodes also available on HBO Max.
