Over 900 judges of the Punjab district judiciary have expressed their disagreement with the proposal to hold court proceedings day and night for the expedited disposal of approximately 1.4 million pending cases.
In response to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi's directive to speed up case resolutions, the Director General of District Judiciary Punjab submitted a report to the National Judicial (Policy Making) Committee.
The report revealed that out of 1,747 judges, 979 judges opposed the idea of extended working hours, while 768 judges - 44% of the totalagreed to preside over courts beyond regular hours to help clear the backlog.
Shortage of Judges Adds to Case Backlog
Punjab's district judiciary currently comprises 152 district & sessions judges, 504 additional district & sessions judges, 110 senior civil judges, and 981 civil judges. However, over 700 judicial seats remain vacant, further exacerbating the burden on the judiciary.
