HASANABDAL:

The Hasanabdal administration has been exposed as a defaulter of Rs70 million in unpaid electricity bills, placing the city's water supply system on the brink of shutdown.

According to the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) Hasanabdal division, the municipal committee has failed to clear electricity bills for approximately 18 connections over the past year. The unpaid dues, including arrears, have now accumulated to Rs70 million.

IESCO has issued a final warning, granting the administration a few days to clear the outstanding payments. Suppose the bills are not paid within the given timeframe. In that case, water supply connections will be disconnected, potentially leaving a significant portion of the city's population without access to clean drinking water.

On the other hand, Hasanabdal's Administrator and Assistant Commissioner, Arif Qureshi, acknowledged the financial crisis, revealing that the municipal committee lacks the funds to settle the electricity dues. "The government grant of Rs6.3 million is insufficient to meet the expenses. Monthly salaries and pensions for employees alone total Rs13 million, leaving the committee with a monthly deficit of Rs5 million," he explained.

Qureshi further stated that the matter has been brought to the attention of the district administration, and he remains optimistic about finding a resolution.
