NFL Hall of Famer and Minnesota Vikings legend Randy Moss has revealed that he is recovering after surgery for bile duct cancer.

The former wide receiver announced his diagnosis and treatment during an Instagram livestream on Friday.

Randy Moss, 47, shared that he underwent a Whipple procedure, a complex surgery commonly used to treat bile duct and pancreatic cancers. The cancer was located between his pancreas and liver.

“I did have cancer,” Randy Moss said. “They found it in the bile duct, right between the pancreas and the liver. I’m back. Your boy is back, man.”

The football icon thanked his medical team, family, friends, and fans for their support during his six-day hospital stay. “Dr Martini, you’re the man,” Randy Moss said, expressing gratitude to his surgeon.

The Whipple procedure involves removing parts of the pancreas, small intestine, and bile duct to eliminate tumours. While Randy Moss did not specify the exact type or stage of his cancer, the tumour's removal suggests an early-stage diagnosis.

Randy Moss, who stepped down as an ESPN analyst earlier this month due to health concerns, stated that he will undergo chemotherapy and radiation as part of his recovery process.

Dr Nguyen Tran, a Mayo Clinic expert not involved in Randy Moss’ care, explained that bile duct cancer is often treated with the Whipple procedure, which removes affected areas without touching the liver in many cases.

Randy Moss remains optimistic despite the challenges ahead. "Some trying times, of course, but we made it through," he said, expressing hope for a full recovery.

Previously Green Bay Packers icon Brett Favre took to X to share his support for Randy Moss and his family, posting, “Sending prayers to Randy Moss and his loved ones. Randy is and always will be one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history. He’s undoubtedly on the WR Mount Rushmore.”

However, Thaddeus Moss, Randy’s son, was quick to respond to Favre’s post, dismissing the claims.

"Brett , the support is appreciated, truly. This is not true. My father will address the world when he is ready to," Thaddeus wrote.
