Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalised following an injury sustained while travelling with a congressional delegation in Luxembourg, her office confirmed on Friday.
According to media reports, Pelosi, 84, "sustained an injury during an official engagement and was admitted to the hospital for evaluation," her spokesman, Ian Krager, said in a statement.
The Democratic representative from California is “currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said, adding, "She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the CODEL engagements."
The delegation, which had been travelling to Luxembourg and Belgium to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, had planned to take part in commemorations over the weekend.
The delegation, which includes US lawmakers, veterans, and dignitaries, was scheduled to attend observances in Luxembourg and Belgium.
Pelosi’s office had noted that the group would be joined by veterans, their families, active service members, and government officials for the anniversary events.
In his statement, Krager relayed Pelosi's gratitude, saying she "conveys her thanks and praise to our veterans and gratitude to the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe."
"Speaker Emerita Pelosi was personally and officially honoured to travel with the distinguished delegation, many of whom had family members who fought in World War II — including her uncle, Johnny. She looks forward to returning home to the US soon," Krager concluded.
