The general meeting of the City Council of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was marred by usual chaos, sloganeering and scuffle between members of the treasury and opposition benches. However, despite the intense uproar, the members passed 21 resolutions in just 20 minutes, setting a new record in democratic history.
The meeting was held on Thursday with Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad in the chair at the KMC Headquarters.
The opposition members started chanting slogans as soon as the session began, following which they also tore copies of the agenda.
Frenzy ensued shortly between the government and opposition members. After the session, Jamaat-e-Islami members also staged a protest against the mayor. Opposition leader Saifuddin said that no development work is being done in the city. He alleged that the mayor and his team are all busy in corruption.
During the session, the treasury members passed a resolution for strict action against the quack doctors in Karachi. Other resolutions included allotment of land to Karachi Metropolitan University, recovery of charges on issuance of various certificates at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, and steps to eliminate encroachments in Karachi.
In addition, the resolutions also demanded the construction of a hospital in Moro Mirbahr (formerly Site Town), restoration of traffic flow at Banaras Chowrangi, and the demand of gas in Sindh.
The last resolution emphasised the need to restore Jamila Pumping Station in Karachi's Old City area and protect cultural heritage.
Through its first resolution, the council congratulated Karamullah Waqasi, Imam Bux Brohi, Babar Magsi, and Muhammad Waqar on their victory in the local government by-elections.
Karamullah Waqasi was also congratulated on being elected Leader of the House.
The second resolution approved the promotion and upgradation of employees of grades 1 to 4 who have served KMC for more than 15 years.
Another resolution congratulated Mayor Murtaza Wahab on the 'development projects', which include repairing roads at a cost of Rs2 billion, renovating bridges and flyovers, developing parks, and water supply and drainage projects.
In another resolution, the mayor was also congratulated for solarising the KMC main building.
Opposition
Local government representatives, belonging to opposition parties, staged a protest demonstration against the Pakistan People Party over discrimination in connection with issuence of funds to union councils.
The protest was unique in nature as it was staged by the elected representatives outside the city council that houses the mayor office, on Thursday.
Saifuddin Advocate, the leader of the opposition, in his address said that the occupation mayor only blessed the UC chairmen belonged to the PPP when it comes to development funds and schemes.
He said that the PPP has been ruling over the Sindh province for the past 16 months and the occupation mayor has been imposed on Karachi for one and half years.
The prolonged PPP rule has established that it would never provide any rights or justice to anyone, he said, adding that the PPP only boosted corruption and corrupt practices in the province. He added that the situation in even interior areas of the province was evident on it.
On the occasion, he demanded equal funds for all towns in Karachi and monetary as well as administrative powers for chairmen of union councils.
