Argentinian authorities have charged three individuals in connection with the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who died on October 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires.
Payne, 31, was found with substances in his system, including alcohol, cocaine, and a prescription antidepressant, according to toxicology reports from the National Criminal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office.
Among those charged is one person who accompanied Payne, facing accusations of abandonment of a person followed by death and drug supply. A hotel employee and a third individual are also charged with facilitating drug supply. While none of the accused have been named, authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Payne's final hours.
Officials reported that hotel staff had made emergency calls citing Payne’s extreme intoxication and property destruction. The post-mortem examination concluded that his death resulted from "multiple trauma" and "internal and external hemorrhage" due to the fall, with medical evidence suggesting he may have been in a state of unconsciousness.
Investigators have seized electronic devices, including Payne’s laptop, and reviewed over 800 hours of hotel security footage as part of the inquiry. The prosecutor's office also conducted nine raids in Buenos Aires and collected testimonies from hotel staff, friends, and medical professionals.
Payne's body was released to his family for repatriation to the UK, with tributes pouring in from former bandmates Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, his ex-partner Cheryl, and music producer Simon Cowell. Memorials have been held by fans worldwide in honor of the late singer.
