Palestinian Journalist Bisan Owda has received an Emmy News Award for, “It’s Bisan From Gaza and I’m Still Alive,” at the 45th Annual News & Documentary Emmys.

The documentary secured the Outstanding Hard News Feature Story award in the short-form category, marking a significant recognition for Palestinian voices on a global platform.

A few months ago there were calls from the US-based nonprofit Creative Community For Peace to rescind the nomination, backed by a letter signed by prominent Hollywood figures.

They accused Bisan of having connections to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), which is classified as a terrorist organization by the United States.

Despite facing attempts to discredit her work, Bisan's film garnered support from National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) President Adam Sharp, who reaffirmed the nomination's compliance with competition guidelines.

Bisan’s film, which previously earned a Peabody Award, highlights her family's harrowing escape from bombardment in Gaza.

This Emmy win not only celebrates Bisaan's impactful storytelling but also highlights the vital role of Palestinian journalists in documenting their experiences amid ongoing conflict.

The News & Documentary Emmys aims to honor excellence in journalism and documentary filmmaking, with this year’s awards making strides in amplifying traditionally underrepresented voices in mainstream media narratives.

Reporting on Israel’s assault secured numerous awards at the Emmys, with the Israel-Gaza war featuring prominently among the winners at Wednesday night’s ceremony.

CNN took home the Emmy for Outstanding Breaking News Coverage for its extensive reporting on the conflict. The network also secured the award for Outstanding Continuing News Coverage. In total, CNN led the evening with 11 wins.
