IGP confirms SHO's role in illegal detention

ISLAMABAD:

The Inspector General of Police has informed the Islamabad High Court that the allegations of unlawful detention against three citizens at the Sangjani police station have been substantiated during the police inquiry. The relevant Station House Officer (SHO) has not only been arrested but has also been suspended, and departmental action has been initiated against him.

During the hearing of the case against the unlawful detention, Chief Justice Aamer Farooq emphasised the need for checks and balances. Islamabad IGP Ali Nasir Rizvi submitted a report to the court regarding the investigation into the incident that occurred on August 30, which was formally registered on September 19. "The SHO has been arrested, suspended, and departmental proceedings have commenced, while the investigating officer has also been suspended," the IGP told the court.

"A Special Investigation Team has been formed, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Tarnol has been suspended with a charge sheet already issued against him. Explanations have been sought from the Superintendent of Police, and a committee of two Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) has been established," the IGP added.

Chief Justice Farooq stated that good work should be recognised, and subsequently disposed of the petition.
