Eric Stonestreet reveals hurt over rejected 'Modern Family' spinoff for Mitch and Cam

Eric Stonestreet expresses disappointment about the rejection of a proposed spinoff centered on his character.

Eric Stonestreet, who portrayed Cameron Tucker on ABC's Modern Family, recently shared his feelings about the network's decision to reject a potential spinoff featuring his character and his husband, Mitchell (played by Jesse Tyler Ferguson). In an interview with Graham Bensinger, Stonestreet described the script as "really great," focusing on Mitch and Cam's life in Missouri. "They said no," he recalled, adding, "I think it hurt Jesse and I's feelings. I think it hurt (co-creator) Chris Lloyd's feelings."

Stonestreet expressed his love for the character and his belief that he wasn't "done" with the role when the show concluded. He remarked, "Jesse and I maybe felt like they thought of us as the old guys... that didn't seem worthy of keeping those characters going. It felt a little hurtful. But people make business decisions. We can't get involved in that."

The final episode of Modern Family, which aired in 2020, depicted Cam and Mitch deciding to move to Missouri. When asked if a spinoff could still happen, Stonestreet expressed skepticism, saying, "They had their chance." He emphasized that the proposed spinoff would have been a "slam dunk" given Chris Lloyd's involvement, stating, "It would have been great. If ABC would have said 'let's do it,' I think we'd be on right now."

Despite the disappointment over the spinoff, Stonestreet mentioned the possibility of a Modern Family Christmas special, noting, "There's been talk of that."
