ISLAMABAD:

In a shocking revelation, the Islamabad Healthcare Regulatory Authority (IHRA) on Friday uncovered severe violations at a blood bank during an inspection in the PWD Society and ordered immediately cessation of all types of services.

According to an IHRA official, the authority ordered the blood bank to get registered within 10 working days and ensure compliance.

The IHRA official said it was their second visit to the blood bank following a registration request. It found the blood bank to be operational in blatant disregarding of previous directives.

On further inspection, the team found expired blood bags in the refrigerator, tampered expiry dates on gel cards, and expired reagents. Critical screening for diseases such as hepatitis B and C, HIV, syphilis, and malaria were not conducted for blood bags, they added. Cross-matching and grouping procedures were not properly executed, they continued. Quality control measures, including washing and refilling of used bags without proper checks, were found to be routine practices. A visible microbial growth was also detected in platelet bags raising concerns about contamination risks.
