Pawar, former chief of Board of the Control of Cricket in India (BCCI), will take over from Englishman David Morgan who will finish his two-year tenure as ICC President at the conclusion of the ICC Annual Conference week.
“Butt will meet Pawar to seek support as the PCB is in crisis these days due to drought of international cricket in the country,” a PCB official told The Express Tribune. “However, the meeting is subject to availability of time due to the busy event. Discussions on resumption of bilateral series between the neighbouring countries is also on the cards.”
The PCB chairman, too, hinted at a possible meeting with Pawar but refused to give further details.
“We’ll definitely put our case forward and hope for good support from Pawar but I can’t go into the details yet,” Butt told The Express Tribune from Singapore before adding that details will only be available after the end of the conference.
Butt was also tight-lipped on PCB’s stance over the nomination of John Howard as ICC’s vice-president.
Howard’s nomination, put forward by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket, will come under discussion today and is expected to be finalised tomorrow.
The Australian, facing stiff resistance from South Africa and Zimbabwe because of his past criticism with Robert Mugabe’s regime and Sri Lanka cricket board which is questioning his lack of experience in cricket administration, needs seven of the 10 votes on the ICC executive board to win approval.
