The National Assembly Standing Committee on Industry and Production on Monday summoned the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) officials over the theft of material from the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM).
In the committee meeting led by its chairman Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, the members demanded that the matter should be handed over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for investigation.
The committee members expressed their anger that valuable national asset had been destroyed. They noted that nothing could ever take place inside the PSM premises without the connivance of the administration.
The Ministry of Industries and Production officials informed the committee that last year, news of theft of material worth Rs10 billion surfaced in the media. They added that the ministry had referred the matter to the FIA.
On other matters, the official informed the committee that the demand for urea fertiliser in 2023 was expected to reach 6.5 million tons, which meant that there would be a shortage to the tune of 700,000 tons.
They added that the government had been requested to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the factories to supplement the fertiliser production at the local level. The committee was also informed that Rs5 billion Ramazan Package for Utility Stores had been approved and subsidy would be given on 19 essential items.
