Says police ought to stop unabated murders of youth at the hands of muggers

KARACHI:

The heaviest burden a man could ever carry on his shoulder is the janaza of his son, said Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori on Monday while talking to the media after the funeral of a 22-year-old youth shot dead in front of his father by robbers on Sunday.

Azhar, 22, was killed and his father Masood, 50, was injured by robbers when Azhar put up resistance during a snatching bid at a market in Awami Colony, Korangi No5.

Besides family, friends and relatives, Jamaat e Islami Karachi head Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, Mohajir Qomi Movement Chairman Afaq Ahmed, political personalities and police officials attended the funeral. After the funeral, governor also visited Awami colony police station and took briefing regarding investigations into Azhar's murder.

The governor said that the SHO Jamal Laghari has asked for three days to solve the case. "I will also ask the Chief Minister to seek for a report from the IG within three days, and to take action against the SHO if there is no progress in the case."

Though he is not authorised by the law, the governor summoned the SP and DSP and ordered them to control the increasing incidents of street crimes and robberies and said that the officer who is not performing should be dismissed.

During talking to the media, Tessori said incidents of killing of citizens for resisting robberies are happening frequently in the city, fathers are picking up the bodies of young sons. He said, "what could be a heavier burden a man could heave on his shoulders than the janza of his son." This spate of killings should stop, Tessori asserted.

Governor Tessori again issued a controversial statement regarding his powers warning SHOs to control crime be ready to lose thier jobs. A governor being representative of the federation cannot interfere in executive works of a province, however, Tessori boomed, "ab SHO apni wardi sanbhalien," or the SHOs should save their uniforms. His clear warning to precinct heads to shape up or ship out was more of a political statement than an executive order because as a governor he cannot issue any such directive.
