All vehicular traffic remained suspended on both tracks of the National Highway for several hours on Monday as the residents of union councils of Odero Lal Town staged a sit-in protest in Khyber area of Matiari district.
The residents complained that several UCs, thousands of homes and acres of agricultural rain are still under water but the government has been only giving them false hope of draining the rainwater out.
They said, it last rained over five weeks ago but so far no efforts are made to drain out the water. They blamed the deputy commissioner Matiari saying that he promised during a similar protest 15 days ago that the work will start immediately but he failed to keep his words.
The DC Muhammad Adnan Rasheed informed on Monday that 57 litres of fuel has been procured to operate pumps to drain the rainwater from 12 UCs.
He apprised that the fuel is being obtained on credit, thanks to the personal efforts of Matiari's MNA Makhdoom Jameeluz Zaman and the revenue minister Makhdoom Mehboobuz Zaman.
According to him, a detailed drainage plan for each of the submerged UC was submitted last month to the provincial government. The plan, he added, would cost Rs74 million. He said the release of funds in this regard is still being awaited.
