RAWALPINDI:

A man shot and killed his daughter for refusing the proposal of his choice and fled after committing the crime.

The victim's mother, Najma Bibi, informed the police that they have three sons and two daughters between the ages of 12 and 24. The deceased girl, who was their eldest daughter named Neelam, was married off to her cousin Hasnain Maqsood, but they parted ways four months ago.

She added that a man, Waheed, who is already married, developed contact with Neelam and they wanted to tie the knot. "My husband Muhammad Sajid and I organised a small nikah ceremony with a man in Gangawali village. However, my daughter declined to sign the Nikahnama [Islamic Marriage Contract]. Therefore we all returned home, and Neelam went to her grandmother's house.

"The entire situation enraged my husband, who, in a fit of rage, went to my mother's house, where Neelam was staying. Sajid took out a gun and opened fire at her, killing her on the spot."

Sajid fled the scene after committing the crime. A neighbour while quoting him said that Sajid told him he shot his daughter to death in the name of honour.

Police registered a case and arrested the suspect within two hours of the murder.
