KARACHI:

Police used canes to control protesting teachers heading towards Chief Minister House to push for their demands of regularization of jobs and release of salaries.

Teachers recruited on contract basis across Sindh staged a protest outside the Karachi Press Club on Monday in support of their demand to make their jobs permanent.

As per the representative of the protesters, more than 3,000 teachers were recruited on contract-basis in 2018, including early childhood teachers and junior elementary school teachers.

These educators were hired on contract for three years. However, despite the passage of four years, they have yet to get permanent status, increments available to regular teachers and release of blocked salaries.

The South district deputy commissioner held talks with a four-member representative team of the teachers, but nothing was resolved.

Subsequently, the protestors decided to march on to the CM House to present their demands. Being high-security Red Zone, police tried to stop the marching teachers.

The police and the protestors came face to face near CM House. With teachers unwilling to back down, police resorted to baton charge. Using the infamous police canes, they brought the protesting teachers - known for corporal punishment at the receiving end of the cane.

With gender sensitivity in mind, the district administration deployed substantial number of police women to discipline female teachers. Police took into custody more than 80 male teachers and 30 female teachers during the protest.
