KARACHI:

Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi chief Engr Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman expressed grave concerns over the rising street crimes that continued on even Eidul Fitr after the holy month of Ramzan on Friday.

Unfortunately, he said that the law enforcement agencies in the city, including the police, miserably failed in discharging their prime responsibility.

Quoting media reports, the JI leader said that a pregnant woman was seriously injured and criminals killed an unborn baby in a highly gruesome and cold-blooded fashion while the woman was travelling with her family. He added that it resulted due to the failure of the LEAs in the city.

The JI leader asserted that media reports showed that delinquents killed seven people and wounded 40 others during the holy month of Ramzan.

Similarly, he said that robbers snatched 1,600 bikes and 121 cars during the holy month despite all the towering claims by the government and the LEAs. He added that over 3500 individuals were reportedly mugged in only one month alone.

Engr Naeem ur Rehman said that the media reports showed how poor the performance of the LEAs has become. He further said that the only solution to the burning issue was to take concrete, practical measures instead of lip services and towering claims.

The Sindh government, the provincial police, and other law enforcement agencies need to ensure the security of life and possession of the masses. He demanded that the government relocate the LEA's personnel from VIP protocol duties to deployment for the safety of the masses to mitigate crimes in the megalopolis.

On occasion, he suggested that the police be placed under the control of the respective metropolitan governments in Karachi and other megacities.

The JI leader further said the primary reason behind the rising street crimes is the economic hardship of the masses, while the government did nothing to change the situation. The JI leader questioned how crimes might be rampant in the city while the police high-ups were unaware. He also asked other political parties to come forward jointly and take the matter seriously.
