Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a school van and injured the driver on Adiala Road in the Dhok Rajgan area of Saddar Baaruni Police Station.

The students in the van miraculously remained safe, police said adding that the assailants fled the scene.

Punjab Police Inspector-General Rao Sardar while taking notice of the incident sought a detailed report from Regional Police Officer Rawalpindi. The Punjab police chief has also directed the RPO to immediately arrest the accused.

According to police, the driver of the school van, Mohammad Mushtaq, 60, was on his way to the school in the morning, when his vehicle came under attack by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle. The van driver sustained a bullet injury in the right shoulder.

Eyewitnesses said that they heard the sudden sound of gunshots and the children in the van started screaming. Citizens present at the scene rushed to the scene but the attackers fled the scene. Locals called Rescue 1122 and an ambulance shifted the injured driver to the hospital.

A spokesman for Rescue 1122 said the driver had been shot in the right shoulder.
