Industries given 30 days to ensure fire safety provisions

Most industrial units and commercial centres were not abiding by building and fire safety provisions

All industrial units and commercial centres in the metropolis have been given 30 days to ensure fire safety provisions and owners of buildings located on eight major thoroughfares and highways of the city have been directed to fix structural defects and facades of the said buildings within 180 days.

Karachi Administrator Murtaza Wahab approved two resolutions of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and the Sindh Local Government Act on Wednesday, warning industries and building owners of action if the directives are not implemented within the stipulated time.

Wahab, who is also the Sindh government spokesperson, observed that most industrial units and commercial centres were not abiding by the Karachi Building and Town Planning Regulations 2002 and Fire Safety Provisions 2016.

All deputy commissioners have been directed to inspect factories and industrial units operating in their respective jurisdictions and to take legal action if violations are found.

Moreover, building owners have been directed to rectify structural defects and renovate the facades of structures built on Sharae Faisal, Sharae Pakistan, Ibne Sina Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Sher Shah Suri Road, Abdullah Haroon Road, Sir Shah Suleiman Road and SM Tawfiq Road.
