The latest anthem of the sixth installment of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) has been making headlines since its release.
Titled Groove Mera, the track featured legendary singer Naseebo Lal, Aima Baig and rapping duo Young Stunners. Composed by celebrated musicians Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan (Xulfi) and Adnan Dhool, it was loved by some and criticised by others.
Many took to social media and called out the composers for doing an awful job – one of them being former cricketer Shoaib Akhtar. But while some laughed over Akhtar's derogatory remarks, others – including a trove of celebrities – lashed out at him for insulting artists.
In the meanwhile, a video of Lal pouring her heart out also went viral, whereby she thanked her fans and appreciated the producers for letting her partake in the first anthem of her life. Now, Xulfi has shared a BTS of Lal engaged in the shooting of the song’s video.
“This was a special moment,” he wrote in the caption, “witnessing Naseebo Lal belt her performance out while I gave her cues for her vocal parts.”
“As you can see, I was enjoying this as much as her!” he added. “Will never forget this moment and this transfer of energies," concluded the musician.
Earlier, he had penned an elaborate post defending the veteran from the backlash she was receiving from those who did not like the anthem. "I haven’t recorded a more powerful vocalist ever," he had said. "The conversations I had with her during the #GrooveMera process, I found her to have the kindest heart, the gentlest soul. And most heartwarmingly, she wants to make a difference for the artist community in the country."
"She wants to help the young artist. It was a thoroughly emotional experience recording her. Her will to do the best is second to none. I’m blessed to have done Groove Mera with her," he concluded.
Meesha Shafi had also presented her two cents to the debate surrounding the anthem and Lal's contribution to it. Sharing Xulfi's BTS, she had said Groove Mera wasn't just a musical win, but also "a win over classism, post-colonial inferiority complex and a rigid system that favours only a selective few repeatedly."
