Govt challenges FSC jurisdiction over interest case

Federal Shariat Court'S CJ asked attorney general to file written appliance if jurisdiction of court was challenged

ISLAMABAD:

The federal government has challenged the jurisdiction of the Federal Shariat Court (FSC) regarding the issue of interest.

The case was heard by a three-member FSC bench headed by the FSC chief justice. During the hearing, the attorney general for Pakistan took the position that the Shariat Court has no jurisdiction to hear the case.

The attorney general argued that the case pertained to the interpretation of the Constitution, adding that the interpretation of the Constitution was the sole prerogative of the Supreme Court.

On that, the FSC chief justice asked the attorney general to file written appliance if the jurisdiction of the court was challenged. He said that the court would decide the matter after reviewing the written application. Later, the hearing was adjourned for one month.
