The need to use amplifiers/ boosters by telecom consumers primarily arises due to coverage issues, said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in a statement. To address the issues related to coverage and quality of service (QoS) standards, the PTA has issued directives to the cellular mobile operators (CMOs) to improve network coverage and performance in the affected areas. Furthermore, the PTA has revised coverage obligations and QoS standards for the operators through renewed licences. Moreover, the regulator has taken appropriate steps to resolve the issue of installation of illegal amplifiers and boosters. As per PTA regulations, CMOs and PTA Type Approval holders are allowed to import GSM boosters and install at consumers’ premises. Individuals installing boosters or amplifiers on their own are subject to legal action under relevant provisions of the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-Organisation) Act 1996. PTA has not only taken action against the violators but has also conducted regular awareness campaigns from time to time, advising the public against import, sale and use of illegal GSM boosters/ amplifiers.
