Assailants opened fire at a police constable on Hawkes Bay Road on Tuesday. The injured constable, Azeem Munawwar, 35, was shifted to Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital with gunshot wounds in his abdomen, hand and leg. The police suspect that the act was motivated by personal enmity.
The constable is now in stable condition, said Mauripur DSP Abdul Ghafoor Lakho, adding that Munawar had sustained three bullet wounds and the police found three spent bullet shells at the crime scene.
DSP Lakho told that Munawar had shifted to Mauripur from Agra Taj Colony 10 days ago. After picking a food parcel from Abbasi Hotel, the constable was mounting his motorcycle, when an unidentified man, wearing a helmet, approached him on a motorcycle, opened fire at him and fled, said the DSP.
According to police, Munawar is deputed at Darakhsan Police Station and was currently on leave.
Meanwhile, acting City SSP Shehla Qureshi told The Express Tribune that there was no evidence found to indicate that the incident was the result of a robbery bid. The police have launched investigations and are approaching the matter through different angles, she said.
