A modern shopping plaza should be established to provide alternative shops for those who have been affected by anti-encroachment operations at Light House and its adjacent areas, said Karachi Administrator Iftikhar Ali Shallwani on Friday.

Addressing a delegation of the All Karachi Tajir Ittehad, led by Hakim Shah, Shallwani said that the number of shops for the affectees should be increased to 297.

The delegation apprised Shallwani of the affectees of Mirza Adam Khan and Baloch markets, claiming that 500 shops were razed under the apex court's orders but no alternative places were provided.

Shallwani assured that alternatives would be provided and maintained that directives have already been issued in this regard.

Stating that encroachments around Lea Market should also be removed, Shallwani gave assurances that this would not be done until alternative places were provided.

"We understand the difficulties of the business community but they will also be accommodated in the resettlement of affectees," said Shallwani. Issuing directives for the new plaza at Siddique Wahab Road, Shallwani maintained it would aim to provide every possible facility to shopkeepers as well as offer the people of Lyari a modern market to purchase essential commodities.
