An American businessman of Pakistani origin and a senior organiser of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the province was shot by unidentified armed suspects in Haripur on Sunday.
At least three others were also injured in the incident.
Local police officials said that Malik Tahir Iqbal, who is the PTI Hazara Division Coordinator and deputy secretary-general for the party in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, was returning home after attending a funeral in the Kotera area when his vehicle was intercepted by unidentified armed men who sprayed his vehicle with bullets.
Iqbal, his driver Gul Nawaz along with Gul Khitab and Yasir were left lying in a pool of their blood.
While Iqbal died on the spot, the rest were rushed to the Ghazi Hospital for treatment.
There, doctors described the condition of one of the injured as critical and referred him to a hospital in Abbottabad where he succumbed to his injuries. The police said they have registered a case and have launched an investigation into the attack.
