KARACHI:

The Sind High Court disposed of on Tuesday a plea seeking legal action against K-Electric over deaths caused by electrocution during rains in the city and directed the petitioner to approach the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) over the issue.

A two-member bench, comprising Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro and Justice Shamsuddin Abbasi, remarked that the petitioner could approach the court again if he was not satisfied with the action taken by the NEPRA.

Petitioner, Jamat-e-Islami’s Karachi chapter chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, had maintained in the plea that sections of the Anti-Terrorism Act should be included in the cases against the KE, adding that Rs50 million be paid to the families of victims. He had further moved the court to direct KE to improve its infrastructure.

Local govt polls

Another bench, comprising Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Yousuf Ali Sayeed, disposed of a plea seeking local government elections after the Election Commission of Pakistan submitted its reply on the plea.

The provincial election commission secretary submitted a written reply, stating that elections would be conducted within 120 days after August 30, when the tenures of local government representatives ended.
