WASHINGTON:
Coronavirus cases in the US surged beyond 6 million on Wednesday, according to a running tally of Johns Hopkins University.
The Maryland university counted 6,002,615 confirmed infections and over 183,000 deaths, while more than 2.1 million people have recovered from the disease since it first appeared in the US earlier this year.
Since early July, more than 3 million new cases have been recorded due to recent spikes.
The US continues to be the worst-hit country by the virus since overtaking ground zero China late March, with the highest number of cases and deaths, followed by Brazil and India.
California, Texas and Florida are the states with the highest tallies, with 706,570, 629,680, and 621,586 infections to date, respectively.
Nearly 77.6 million tests have been run to diagnose the disease.
