Traders in the federal capital have urged the government to extend its special construction package, introduced to spur activity in the sector during the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, should be extended for another six months at least.
Meanwhile, National Assembly lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) from the federal capital Raja Khurram Nawaz assured traders of the city that he will try to present an amended bill of the rent control act for Islamabad in the next session of the assembly.
He said this while addressing the business community during a visit to the offices of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) on Wednesday.
The chairperson of the NA Standing Committee on Interior, Nawaz said that the panel has already passed the amended bill hence the way had been paved for presenting the bill on the floor of the house in its next session.
On resolving issues of traders in the capital with regards to the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the police, the Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) and other departments, Nawaz said that they could write to him for redressal.
The ruling party lawmaker said that he will work for the inclusion of the ICCI chief in CDA’s Master Plan Revision Committee so that it is built with the input of the city’s business community.
On improving the transport system in the federal capital, Nawaz said that they were making efforts to create a transport authority dedicated to addressing transport issues for residents of Islamabad.
In this regard, he said that in the next fiscal year, they will build a flyover in Bhara Kahu to ease the flow of traffic there. When asked why the project was not being built this year, Nawaz explained that there were some technical reasons which had caused the delay.
Further, he said that a ring road will be built for the federal capital for which they are currently conducting a survey.
ICCI President Ahmed Waheed appreciated the construction package offered by the government. However, he stressed that the government should extend it until June 30, 2021, so that more investors can invest in the local construction industry.
He hoped the amended rent control law will be passed soon since it was a longstanding concern of traders.
