Death toll from disease exceeds 2,600

The nationwide tally of Covid-19 patients surpassed 142,000 on Sunday as there has been an exponential increase in cases since the start of the current month while the death toll from the disease exceeded 2,600.

The tally of cases in Sindh has moved past 53,000 after 2,287 new cases were confirmed.

Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said 11,197 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours, of which 2,287 came back positive.

He added that 15 more people lost their lives to the virus, taking the death toll in the province to 831. A total of 1,219 patients have recovered in the province in the last 24 hours. The Sindh chief minister said the number of critical patients had increased to 573 while 80 were on ventilators.

Karachi’s death rate shoots up

The Punjab health authorities have reported 2,514 new cases, raising the provincial tally to 52,601. They added that 31 more people had succumbed to the virus and the province’s death toll stood at 969.
According to the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa health department, 563 more people, including two people who have returned from abroad, have tested positive for coronavirus. The new cases have pushed the tally in K-P to 18,013.

It further said 14 more virus patients had lost their lives – five in Peshawar, two each in Nowshera and Malakand and one each in Upper Dir, Khyber, Battagram, Karak and DI Khan, taking provincial death toll total to 675. So far, 4,539 patients have recovered in the province.

In Balochistan, 149 cases and two deaths have been reported in the past 24 hours. The provincial health department said the tally of cases had reached 8,177 while the death toll has hit 85.

K-P bolsters hospital capacity amid virus spurt

Islamabad has reported its highest single-day surge in cases with 771 more people being diagnosed with Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. The federal capital's tally has reached 7,934.

Gilgit Baltistan has reported 51 new cases and Azad Jammu and Kashmir 30. Their virus cases have reached 1,095 and 604, respectively.

Four more people died of the disease in Islamabad, taking its death toll to 75.

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar has warned that coronavirus cases could surge to 1.2 million by the end of July if strict action was not taken against the violators of standard operating procedures (SOPs) issued by the government to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
