KARACHI: Local scuba divers in a rare occurrence got a chance to swim with whale shark near Charna Island, an area near Karachi's Kemari district.

Two brothers, Yasir and Shahzad who belong to Mubarak Village, swam with the rare specie in the ocean, touching different parts of the shark's body while holding its tail.

According to a local fisherman, residents of Mubarak Village often swim with whale sharks and other aquatic animals which he said is part of their hobbies.

"There are many species of whales, dolphins and turtles in the nearby sea," he added.

According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Technical Director Moazzam Ali Khan, whale sharks do not have teeth but in case of danger, they attack their adversaries with their tail.

"In Sindhi language, they are called blind Mangar while in Balochi, they are referred to as Baran," he added.

Khan also said that the whale sharks had been seen for 170 times over the past several years. "During 1970s the whale fish was indiscriminately hunted and the fisherman would use its fat and oil extracted from the liver of the fish for various purposes."
