Pakistan said the proposed expansion of the Security Council must be done by re-balancing the representation of various regions of the world on an equitable basis.

Pakistan's Ambassador to UN Abdullah Hussain Haroon said this to a UN General Assembly panel entrusted to reform the Security Council.

He said representation to developing countries will address issues relating to the under-representation of Asia, Latin American and Africa in the UNSC.

Haroon also said there are serious differences over the expansion the 15-member Security Council.

The Security Council is composed of five veto-wielding permanent members and ten non-permanent members which are elected for a two-year term.

If a country becomes member of UNSC, she should have the equal powers of a permanent member. UNSC should amend its discriminatory policy. A country when applied for membership and if the membership is accepted by the UNSC than the country should be treated as permanent member and should have all the powers to veto in the General Assembly which goes against the interest of a particular country.
