LAHORE: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday handed a cheque for Rs350 million to Jinnah Hospital principal, Prof Javaid Akram, for the Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre at the hospital.

The grant, arranged from the Pakistan Baitul Maal, was presented to Prof Akram in a ceremony held at the State Guest House. Earlier, speaking at the ceremony, Gillani said his government was supporting health and education sectors despite their devolution to the provinces under the 18th Amendment. He said federal government was building liver transplant centres in Lahore and Islamabad. During his recent private visit to the United Kingdom, Gillani said, he had signed agreements of over £650 million for investment in education sector.

Gillani said an education conference would soon be organised in Islamabad. He said the chief ministers of all provinces would be briefed about federal government’s efforts for promotion of education at the conference. Members of Friends of Pakistan Forum would also be invited to the conference, he said.

Prof Akram earlier said the 125-bed Burn and Reconstructive Surgery Centre would be the largest burn centre in Asia.
