Sridevi's sudden death left her fans stunned while the Bollywood industry shook to its core at the loss of an icon. Such was the power of India’s inscrutable acting legend whose movies charmed people into believing in fairytale endings.

She died on February 24, 2018 by drowning in a bathtub in a hotel in Dubai, reported Gulf News and left behind two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor. Her producer, husband Boney Kapoor is also among people who are still coping with the irrevocable tragedy.

Witness to Boney's emotional breaking down on stage in Bangkok, the outlet reported that during the International India Film Academy Awards 2018, he collected the Best Actor (Female) Award for his wife while dabbing his tears. “I miss you every day, every night,” said Boney. Sridevi’s stepson Arjun Kapoor also hugged his father and ushered him off the stage. There wasn’t a single dry eye in the house.

This was when the star posthumously won her first Indian National Award following her long-spanning career of 300-plus films, in 2018 for her role in Mom. She played the fierce mother who avenges her step daughter’s gang rape in the film.

Sridevi’s magnetic appeal didn't even diminish after her death. Her cameo in Shah Rukh Khan’s Zero - in which she played herself at a star-studded socialite - was lovingly embraced. In fact, a collective sigh could be heard in the cinema hall as she made her appearance on the big screen.

Her daughter Janhvi carried a piece of her mother with her that day; she wore one of her mother’s silk saris for the awards function.

The late, age-defying, well-preserved diva wore her fame and blazing talent like a cape on her shoulders. She told the outlet back in 2017 that she felt as if Mom was the first release of her career. “I never look back... I feel odd watching myself in movies or on TV, so I never watch. I just look forward.”

Sridevi made her debut as child artist with the 1967 Tamil film Kandhan Karunai at the age of 4. She started her acting career in lead role as a child with M. A. Thirumugam’s 1969 mythological Tamil film Thunaivan. She continued to act as a child artist in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films and made her Hindi film debut at age 9 with Rani Mera Naam in 1972.

Following her notable appearance in 1975's romantic drama Julie, Sridevi's, first starring role in Bollywood came with the 1979 drama film Solva Sawan, and she received wider recognition with the 1983 film Himmatwala.
