Depression and teenagers

Letter February 16, 2020
Depression is the most prevalent disorder for mental health worldwide.

ISLAMABAD: Depression is the most prevalent disorder for mental health worldwide. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that young people face the greatest risk of having symptoms of depression and anxiety. Everyone faces pressures in order to fit in with their friends and others, but this pressure to get recognition and approval is particularly acute in teenagers. They feel a bit too pressured and feel it is necessary to change things about themselves, or pretend to be someone completely different. While teens are already trying to identify and learn who they are as an individual, this additional pressure to behave or appear in certain ways can often cause them to feel confused or at odds with their own self. It can lead teenagers to suffer from low self-esteem, anxiety and depression as social pressure requires that they act in certain ways even if they are not happy with it. My suggestion is to not be fake for those who are not worthy enough, as your mental health should be your top priority, and be kind and considerate to those who are suffering from any kind of mental illness because a little consideration and a little thought for others makes all the difference.
