Moiz Ahmed, 60, sustained injuries when an unidentified man, who was trying to loot him, opened fire on him when he resisted his attempt. The robber, however, was caught soon and beaten up by passersby who later handed him over to the police.
Both Ahmed and the robber were later shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The robber's identity is yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, conflicting reports have emerged pertaining to the details of the incident.
According to Central SSP Arif Aslam Rao, four robbers had attempted to break into the bank situated beside the ATM chamber and on being informed, a police party immediately reached the spot and took into custody the suspect trying to loot Ahmed. Meanwhile, the others fled the scene, he said.
However, refuting SSP Rao's account, the bank manager, Qamar Farooq Bhatti, said that only one robber perpetrated the offence and he did not try to break into the bank. The police reached the site of the incident when citizens were beating up the robber, he added.
Arshad, the security guard deployed outside the bank at the time of robbery, said that Ahmed was waiting outside the chamber for his wife who had gone inside to withdraw money. It was then that a robber attempted to loot him, said Arshad. He added that Ahmed, however, managed to get hold of the robber at which the latter opened fire, injuring the former.
"I too fired in the air in a bid to control the situation," said Arshad. "Following this, area locals arrived and started beating the robber."
Speaking to The Express Tribune, Sir Syed Town Police Station SHO Nawaz Brohi said that a 30 bore pistol, four live rounds, two bullet shells and a motorcycle had been seized from the possession of the arrested robber, whose identity is yet to be determined.
