ISLAMABAD:

Just three days short of the Supreme Court’s deadline for the appointment of chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the government is set to petition the court to first give its judgment on the review appeal pending before it for the reinstatement of former chairman Justice (retd) Deedar Hussain Shah.

Talking to media outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, former law minister Babar Awan said that the government has requested the court to suspend its previous order to avoid any ambiguity. The apex court had given the government one month to appoint Justice (retd) Deedar Shah’s successor.

Awan stated that the court allowed NAB prosecutor general to be appointed in consultation with deputy chairman NAB since a new chairman is yet to be appointed after the court barred the former chairman from office.

“Those who attacked the Supreme Court and police stations are now teaching us to respect the judiciary,” he said. The Pakistan Peoples Party has always respected the judiciary and will continue to do so in future, he added.

“No past government can compare with the ruling coalition in implementing the court’s verdicts,” he claimed. Awan criticised Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif for not respecting the court’s verdict against his principal secretary, Tauqeer Shah.

He said Sharif’s government had not yet complied with the Lahore High Court’s order to remove CPO Lahore Ahmed Raza Tahir.

Playing the Sindh card, he accused the Punjab government of disrespecting Sindhi judges. Rana Maqbool who was declared an absconder by the Sindh High Court has found shelter in Punjab, he added.
