It is routine to see Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) being the talk of the town on Twitter for some reason or the other; however, this time around a change in the varsity's name had users of the micro-blogging site in a fix.

The private educational institute in Lahore will now be called LUMS University, i.e. LUMS will no longer be used as an acronym.

Vice-Chancellor Dr Arshad Ahmad sent an email to the students and faculty, saying that "the step had been taken as the varsity has evolved from a management school to a comprehensive university offering over 30 undergraduate and graduate degree programmes through its schools of business, humanities, and social sciences, science and engineering, law and education”.

Is LUMS an ‘elitist’ institution?

The management feels, the email went on to read, that the “disciplinary growth and its comprehensive status is better captured by LUMS University”.

The explanation, however, fell on deaf ears as #LUMSU soon became the top trend in the country with users of the micro-blogging site mercilessly trolling the varsity.
