Anti-graft watchdog says corruption has put country in social and economic crisis

RAWALPINDI: The National Accountability of Bureau (NAB) Chairman Javed Iqbal has said NAB has recovered Rs300 billion of looted money since its establishment and is determined to uproot the ‘cancer of graft’ from the country.

“Corruption exists throughout the world in different forms but in Pakistan it has become a cancer which is expanding,” Iqbal said while addressing a seminar on Friday at the Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU) titled 'Role of Youth in Eradication of Corruption in Pakistan'.

The chairman said corruption has put the country in a social and economic crisis and now NAB has to bring it down. “NAB vows to continue its campaign for indiscriminate accountability. If holding the corrupt accountable is a crime then we will commit that crime again and again,” he said.

NAB chief encouraged students to repose trust in NAB, which, he said, is working to securing their future. “The only way to remove corruption is to hold ourselves accountable at individual level. Corruption is a menace and it must be eradicated from the society,” he added.

Regarding the step taken to create 'Character Building Societies' at university level, he said: "We proposed this idea because we are fully aware that only youth possess the power to change things."

He advised the students to give preference to national interests over personal interests, adding that the country is currently facing financial troubles but the future is bright for the new generation.
