LAHORE:

A Lahore High Court (LHC) division bench on Thursday adjourned the hearing for indefinite period on a bail petition in Sheikh Afzal of Haris Steels Mill, involved in the Bank of Punjab (BoP) loan scam.

The judge adjourned the hearing after Afzal’s counsel, former federal law minister Babar Awan, did not appear in court on Wednesday. Afzal has been in jail for 19 months now.

Earlier, Afzal had sought bail from the court saying that he had been falsely involved in the case.

He had also told the court that his health was deteriorating.

The National Accountability Bureau had filed a reference on September 27, 2007, against 12 people, including six BoP officials and six other accused in a Rs9 billion fraud.

After the filing of the reference, former BoP president Hamesh Khan’s name was put on the exit control list, however, on March 27, 2008, he managed to flee the country. Khan was arrested in the US following Pakistan’s request to the Interpol and was extradited to Pakistan.
