Teenage girl dies in blaze at Gujrat shopping mall

Dozens of shops and apartments gutted, vehicles destroyed in fire that damaged eight floors

GUJRAT: A 15-year old girl was killed while dozens of shops and apartments were gutted in a blaze that broke out at a shopping mall in Gujrat, about 112 kilometres (70 miles) north of Lahore, on Wednesday, Express News reported.

The fire erupted at Alina Shopping Mall, located on Bhimber Road, and soon engulfed over a dozen shops and 60 apartments.

At least 20 vehicles were also damaged in the fire.

The girl died after being trapped in an apartment part of the shopping complex.

At least 14 rescue teams participated in the operation to control the fire.

Eight floors were destroyed as a result of the fire which remained out of control for several hours.

At least 100 women and children were evacuated from the building.

The cause of the fire, which caused losses in millions, was not known at the time of the filing of this report.

In 2013, 17 children and a teacher were killed when their school bus caught fire in Gujrat. Seven other children were injured in the blaze which destroyed the vehicle.
