Misuse of power

PESHAWAR: Gone are the days when the misuse of power would go unnoticed. With the advent of new sources of expression, those who hold power have become accountable to the public.

Recently, police brutality came into limelight when Salahudin, a mentally-challenged man, died in police custody. Following that incident, several other cases are continuously appearing in the media exposing the police’s misuse of power. The custodial death of Salahuddin caused immense anger among people. The problem in our society is that when one is vested with power, he often misuses it. As a result, innocent people face injustice and become victims of violence. The incumbent government had criticised previous governments many times for not taking stern action against the misuse of power and promised to stop police brutality. It is disappointing that the incumbent government has not fulfilled promises despite being in power for over a year. It is the responsibility of the government to keep a check on violation of human rights. More and more efforts should be directed towards exposing human rights violations. Moreover, the power of a united people is undeniable. Hence, people need to unite against such matters. Furthermore, the government needs to punish human rights violators and set harsh precedents for future in order to curb the police’s misuse of power.
