Pakistan Navy commemorates its 54th ‘Navy Day’

The day is celebrated to pay homage to the martyrs of 1965

KARACHI: Pakistan Navy celebrated the 54th anniversary of 'Navy Day' on Sunday, commemorating its efforts on September 8 in the 1965 war.

'Operation Somnath' was carried out on this date during the war with India, with the Pakistan Navy launching an attack at the Indian Radar Station in the coastal town of Dwarka, Gujrat. Submarine Ghazi of the Pakistan Navy managed to confine the Indian Navy Fleet within its own waters.

"Navy Day will remain a golden chapter in our naval history," said Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Zafar Mahmood Abbasi. In a statement issued on Sunday, he said that the Pakistan Navy commemorates this day to pay homage to the heroes of the 1965 war and keep alive that fearlessness in the face of danger.

He expressed his solidarity with the people of Kashmir and said that Indian hostilities towards Jammu and Kashmir had serious implications for peace in the entire region.

According to a naval spokesperson, the day began with prayers for the progress and prosperity of the nation in all naval mosques. Fateha was offered for the martyrs of the 1965 war and wreaths were laid at memorials across the country. A prayer was also said for the cause of the Kashmiri people. The celebrations included flag hoisting ceremonies at all naval units and establishments as well as various sporting activities.

A documentary, titled 'Zarb-e-Aab', was released on the day highlighting the capabilities of the Pakistan Navy and the pledge of its officers to sacrifice everything for the country.
