DNA test acquits Daska rape suspect

LAHORE: The DNA test of the accused, who police thought was the ‘serial rapist’ in Daska, has proved that he was not involved in the crime.

The Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Afzal Virk submitted a report before the Lahore High Court stating that the DNA test of accused Abdul Razaq had proved that he was innocent. The SP further submitted that they were completing formalities to release him, after discharging the case against him. He further said that they were trying hard to arrest the real culprits.

The SP submitted the report in the court of LHC Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif who had taken suo moto notice of the sexual assault on seven minor girls and boys after being kidnapped in Daska.

After hearing the report, the chief justice gave police until June 24 “to arrest the real culprits”.

On May 13, the District Police Officer (DPO) Sialkot submitted before the court that they had arrested Razaq and declared that he has sexually assaulted at least one of the minor girls.

The DPO had said during the earlier hearing that had been identified by one of the girls, who had been assaulted. He said the girl also identified the place where he attacked her.

A DNA test was conducted because another victim could not identify him, the DPO had said.

The CJ had taken suo motu notice on a news items and converted it into a petition under Article 199 (1)(c) of the Constitution. According to the news item, seven minor girls and boys were assaulted during one and a half month. Two girls died as a result.
