The idea of justice

Letter August 23, 2019
Naming and shaming the criminal is an essential part of the justice system

LAHORE: In a just society, laws are framed to provide justice for all citizens, irrespective of their status, affiliations, faith and nature of public office held. Islam places stress on the principle that all men are equal before the law. Naming and shaming the criminal is an essential part of the justice system, especially when the crime committed has been proven.

Theodore Roosevelt stated, “No man is above the law and no man is below it, nor do we ask any man’s permission when we ask him to obey it”. In Pakistan, elected presidents, PMs, CMs, ministers have been tried in courts of law. In some cases, the nature of their crime is not revealed by the authorities so that the public remains in the dark. Any irregularities or abuse of power and allegations of corruption, by anyone holding civilian posts, should be tried by the judiciary all the same.
